The first edition of this book was published in 1996. This was John Wexler and Kevin Flynn's first book together and Flynn's first Authoritative Reference type book. The first edition was an immediate success and quickly sold out. In January of 2009, Flynn completed a book on the Lincoln Cent Matte Proofs. For this second edition of this book, Wexler has completely overhauled the doubled die and RPM sections, and Flynn updated the OMM section of this book with new pictures, information, and new die varieties. Flynn added many new archive documents, many of which have been previously unpublished. This greatly helped update the history section of the book. Flynn also updated some of the interesting hot topics and Lincoln cent stories and added a few new ones to the center of the book. A few experts in the Lincoln cent series added their expertise in the collecting aspect of Lincoln cents.

The Authoritative Reference on Three Cent Nickels, Third Edition by Kevin J. Flynn and Edward Fletcher

The objective of this book is to create a complete reference on the Three Cent Nickel series including the history, grading, collecting, and National Archive letters and documents which are relevant to this series. Die varieties in the three cent nickel series includes overdates, doubled dies, misplaced dates, and repunched dates. Walter Breen in his “Complete Encyclopedia”, presented several overdates, a 1877/6, 1878/7, 1887/6, and a 1883/2. The only one of these which has been validated has been the two 1887/6 overdates, one on a proof die and one on a business die. This book contains 15 doubled dies, 16 misplaced dates, 2 overdates, and 57 repunched dates. This is the third edition of this book. The first edition was published in 1999. The second edition was printed in 2004 with updated pricing for each die variety. This third edition contains new archive documents, die counts, certified population counts, a date by date analysis of the Three Cent nickel series, an analysis of the Three Cent nickels by several experts in the series, and several new die varieties.

The primary purpose of this book is to present detailed die diagnostic descriptions and photographs to be used to identify and authenticate Lincoln cent matte proofs. Die states diagnostics are also included. This book contains many more photographs of diagnostics not published before and a few new die combinations which were not previously listed. Another objective of this book is to present an analysis of the striking characteristics for Lincoln cent matte proofs. Side by side comparisons and photographs were done between matte proofs and business strikes showing the details of the primary design elements and the rims, edges, and corners. A date-by-date analysis for the matte proof series is presented. Included for each year is an analysis of striking characteristics, surface characteristics, scarcity analysis, general comments, prices realized from Heritage auctions, current values, and certified population counts. A detailed analysis is presented on all of the silver and minor proofs counts between 1909 and 1916. This includes all delivery dates for each series. Archive letters are also presented which show how many collectors did not get 1909 VDB proof coins and were upset and that the mint was not obliged to notify collectors of new proofs.

The most surprising is the 1944S RPM-002 which exhibits a S mintmark wide southwest and is worth the trouble searching for. The purpose of this book is to create a starting point in having a visual reference in which you can identify a particular die variety.

There are seven misplaced dates listed in this book, four from 1908 alone. Repunched dates are abundant here, with over 100 RPDs listed. Each variety includes detailed photographs, a description, die markers, and pricing information. A Hot Top section is included which refutes the variety Walter Breen listed as an 1899/8 overdate, but this is just the result of a die chip in the top of the second 9.

The primary objective of this book is to present as many Mercury Dime die varieties as possible. This book includes over 60 doubled dies, over half of which are new listings. There are also 50 RPMs listed in this book. The most dramatic and sought after Mercury Dime die variety is the 1942/1 and 1942/1-D overdates. Both of these overdates were created by working dies first hubbed at the end of 1941 with 1941 dated working hubs, and then being rehubbed at the beginning of 1942 with 1942 working hubs. The hottest Mercury dime RPMs are the 1945 D/ horizontal D (RPM-002) and 1945 S/ horizontal S (RPM-002), both of these varieties are rare and command a dramatic premium. There are only about 20 RPMs in all of the series which fall in the category of mintmark over horizontal or inverted mintmark.

An analysis is also presented on the number of proof coins struck between 1864 and 1873. This was the author's first work and still one of his favorite series.
